Ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH)is a formal copolymer of ethylene and vinyl alcohol. Because the latter monomer mainly exists as its tautomer acetaldehyde, the copolymer is prepared by polymerization of ethylene and vinyl acetate to give the ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) copolymer followed by hydrolysis. The plastic resin is commonly used in food applications, and it has lately found application in plastic gasoline tanks for automobiles. Its primary purpose is to provide barrier properties, primarily as an oxygen barrier for improved food packaging shelf life and as a hydrocarbon barrier for fuel tanks. EVOH is typically coextruded or laminated as a thin layer between cardboard, foil, or other plastics. EVOH copolymer is defined by the mole % ethylene content: lower ethylene content grades have higher barrier properties; higher ethylene content grades have lower temperatures for extrusion.

PP/EVOH/PPis the high- barrier multilayers plastic material developed for retorted foods, such as baby food, tuna, fish , fruits and vegetables, soups, sauces, beverages and pet foods specifically. The packaging is in a very convenient format offering long shelf-life at room temperatures, microwaveable and easy consumptions.

As the consumer's container of choice for microwave applications, High-barrier plastic container is the ideal package for food sterilization and pasteurization. PP/EVOH/PP material delivers the shelf stable and preservative-free food contents that do not require refrigeration before opening. High-barrier PP is ideal for products requiring extended shelf life as it mainly minimises the transfer of oxygen - by using EVOH as the chosen barrier material. EVOH also protects food from outside odours therefore retaining flavour. High-barrier containers can withstand temperatures within the range of +2 celsius degree to + 125 celsius degree and is resistant to water, salt and acid solutions.

Components
PP: It is possible to use either homopolymer or copolymers depending on the applications. It can be produced in white, translucent, color or bi-color.
EVOH: Copolymer made from polyvinyl alcohol and ethylene. It has excellent barrier properties to gases due to the polyvinyl alcohol.
